Krasnoyarsk City Museum
A formal opening of the Krasnoyarsk City Museum took place in 1889. Its creation was initiated by the Matveev spouses, who were intellectuals. Originally the museum presented items donated by merchant families and scientists of the city. In 1929 the museum collections were transferred to the building constructed specially for the museum according to the project of an architect L. A. Chernyshev. The museum building was designed in an Egyptian style, its facades are decorated by wall paintings imitating those in the Ancient Egypt. Today Krasnoyarsk Regional Museum of Local Lore is one of the largest museums of Siberia and the Far East. The museum collection counts more than 470 thousand depository items. These are archaeological, ethnographic and natural science collections, as well as epistolary heritage of the Decembrists, funds of V. I. Surikov, V. P. Astasfyev, D. A. Khvorostovsky and other outstanding personalities of our region. Events offered by the museum personnel impress with their diversity and originality. Ethnographic Carnival, Tokens of the Soviet Period, The Tunguska Phenomenon are the names of only some of the excursions in the museum, where you can know more about the events and interesting facts from the history of the city, Krasnoyarsk Territory and Russia. For preschool and older children, we’ve developed unusual educational programmes, hold contests, academic competitions, quizzes, and quests: A Drop of Water, In Search of an Ancient Pangolin, Uncle Hoo-oo. Organising ecological and patriotic events, personnel of the museum attracts attention to highly important issues of modern times; nurture a culture of careful attitude to nature, historical and spiritual values; cultivate love to the native land, develop traditions of educational type of leisure activities.
